A speeding vehicle has knocked dead a traffic policeman and injured another critically at Kampiringisa traffic police checkpoint in Kammengo sub-county in Mpigi district.
The deceased has been identified as police constable Alex Kakose while the injured is Elias Asaya. Both the deceased and injured police officers are attached to Kammengo police station. Asaya is admitted at Mpigi health centre IV in critical condition.
Lydia Tushabe, the Katonga Region police spokesperson, says that duo was knocked this morning by a Toyota Harrier registration number UAX 542N being driven by 61-year-old Charles Tuhimbise.
"The driver was driving at a very high speed and when he saw the checkpoint he tried to stop suddenly thereby losing control of the vehicle which overturned after knocking the police officers," Tushabe said.
Abdu Kizza, a resident of Kammengo who witnessed the accident, says that the driver bumped into the checkpoint from a sharp corner.
"It would be better for the police to change that checkpoint to another spot because many drivers come without knowing that they are approaching a checkpoint with tire cutters," he said.
He says that several accidents have happened at the same spot and wondered why police insist on setting up the checkpoint at the same spot. Police have taken Kakose's body to Mulago hospital mortuary for postmortem while Tumuhimbise is in custody at Mpigi police station.
Police have towed the wreckage of his vehicle to Kammengo police station.
