The headteacher of Royal college Makindye, Cyrus Kitamirike has been stabbed to death allegedly by his fiance, Moreen Nakintu, 26.
According to police, the deceased met his death at his home on Sunday morning in Makindye, a Kampala suburb. Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) spokesperson, Patrick Onyango says police officers at Makindye police station in Kirundu Zone heard a woman screaming for help during the morning hours.
The officers rushed to where the woman's voice was coming from and found to her tied near the lifeless body.
"According to police officers, they found a woman who identified herself as Moreen Nakintu, 26, tied with a white rag around the mouth, neck and was half-naked. There was a dead body beside her," Onyango said.
He explains that after being untied, Nakintu said she was the wife to the deceased.
"It is when she revealed that deceased was a headmaster of Royal college Makindye," he said.
Onyango explained that since Nakintu seemed to be in an unstable condition, police officers called in a patrol vehicle which rushed her to hospital for treatment. Katwe police station that serves as the headquarters for Kampala Southern Region dispatched detectives to start investigations and preserve the scene of crime.
"Detectives examined the scene and got relevant exhibits like the victim's shirt, beddings, the killer knife from the pit latrine and blood samples. The body of the deceased was taken to Mulago city mortuary for postmortem," Onyango said.
Police interrogated nearby residents who said they knew the couple. It was established that the couple had been involved in a dispute emanating from an induced abortion. Nakintu had allegedly aborted Kitamirike's pregnancy about four days back.
"It's said that Nakintu has a child she conceived for another man. The alleged aborted pregnancy is said to have belonged to the deceased. It is suspected that the purported pregnancy that was aborted was the root cause of the disagreement that led to the murder of Kitamirike Cyrus," Onyango said.
Armed with information from the neighbours, detectives went to interrogate Nakintu at the hospital and were able to establish that she didn't have any bodily injury.
Nevertheless, Nakintu allegedly had blood around her breasts and the wound on the body of the deceased appeared to have been caused by stabbing particularly using a knife.
More than 4,000 people were killed in 2018, according to Criminal Investigation Directorate. Of these, only 160 were by use of guns while the rest were by stabbing, hacking or poisoning. Since the coronavirus lockdown that started last month, police have recorded a spike in domestic violence cases.
