One of the patients who were admitted at Kilembe Mines hospital in Kasese district before it was devastated by flash floods died before the planned evacuation.
The hospital was ruined when river Nyamwamba burst its banks resulting in floods that washed away medicines and other essential equipment on Thursday.
As a result, the authorities resolved to evacuate all 87 patients who were found at the hospital at the time of the tragedy.
But the hospital administrator Onesmus Kibaya confirmed that one patient, who was on oxygen, died before he was evacuated. Kibaya says that the heavy floods disrupted electricity supply causing a disruption in the oxygen supply at the hospital. Kibaya further said the washed away roads also slowed down the evacuation.
Four patients were on oxygen at the time of the floods. Kibaya adds that three other patients are being treated from Kagando hospital. The evacuated patients have been taken to the municipal health centre, St. Paul's health centre and Kagando hospital
