The hearing of a case in which the state minister for Labour Mwesigwa Rukutana is charged with attempted murder, assault, malicious damage and threatening violence has commenced at Ntungamo Chief Magistrate's court.
The case that was supposed to start yesterday Monday, failed to kick off following failure by the prosecution to produce witnesses.
Chief magistrate Gordon Muhimbise adjourned the case to today Tuesday and warned the prosecution that they were given enough time to prosecute the case.
Today state prosecutor Richard Muhereza told the court that he was ready to produce seven witnesses in court to pin Rukutana. The seven witnesses are Moses Muhumuza, Daniel Rweburingi, Justus Niwanya, Justus Karuhanga, Stuart Kamukama, Juma Kahitana and the police detective.
At the commencement of the hearing, Muhereza presented Moses Muhumuza as the first witness. Muhumuza is the owner of the car that minister Rukutana allegedly shattered its windscreen and vandalized during the scuffle.
The prosecution alleges that Rukutana and his guards shot at the vehicle, a Toyota Rav-4 registration UAQ 840 X belonging to Muhumuza who was a supporter of his rival Naome Kabasharira injuring one of the occupants, Dan Rwibirungi.
Muhimbize said that the hearing of the case will last five days. Rukutana's defence lawyers are led by Caleb Alaka of Alaka and Co. Advocates.
Rukutana was arrested with three of his bodyguards from his home in Kagugu in Rushenyi on September 4 and subsequently appeared in court on 7th September and remanded to Kitalya prisons in Wakiso. He was later on 15th September granted bail.
