A suspect who the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) said had been killed in an armed robbery in Mutundwe has appeared in person at Nateete police station.
Wycliffe Ssesanga's name appeared on the list of the four suspected robbers who were shot dead in an operation conducted by Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI), UPDF and Local Defence Unit (LDU).
Others were Lameck Mayanja a resident of Kabalagala, Dick Mugalu a resident of Muyenga and Ismail Ssegirinya, a resident of Kansanga, located in Makindye Division, in Kampala. On Thursday, officers at Nateete police station were shocked when Ssesanga surfaced without any injuries on his body.
Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, said Ssesanga was forced to go to the police after his vehicle was involved in the robbery. Ssesanga is currently being detained at Nateete police station.
Ssesanga saw the pictures after he was summoned by the chairperson of YTK zone in Kansanga for delaying to pay rent to his landlord. As he was still negotiating on how to clear his landlord, a neighbour showed him pictures of his car a Toyota Wish registration number UBE 808F that had allegedly been used in the armed robbery.
"Because the LCI chairman had summoned him, the landlord had already reported him to the LCI. The LCI chairman was settling the issue of rent payment [and] that is when somebody came and brought for him a phone and said; 'people are saying that you're dead, that you were shot and yet you're here.' So that's when they started communicating and found out that he was still alive, but he has been arrested and detained at Nateete for further questioning, we want to see if he has any connection to the attempted robbery." said Onyango.
Onyango said Ssesanga alleges that his colleague, Lameck Mayanja who was one of the suspects shot dead, approached him on the fateful day claiming he had a client who wanted to hire a car for a self-drive. According to Onyango, Ssesanga who is also a special hire driver, told police that on the fateful day, he took a client to Entebbe airport and he came back between 6.30 and 7am. And because he wanted to take a rest, he gave away his car to Mayanja after he approached him with an offer of a client who wanted a self-drive.
The robbery was reportedly planned in Kansanga and Mutundwe targeting a businessman who had put his house on sale. Mayanja was a special hire driver stationed near Kabalagala police station.
Ssesanga said he Mayanja him as a quiet person who had never engaged in criminal activities. CMI, police and LDU are still hunting for three other suspects who allegedly escaped in another motor vehicle registration number UAN 386H a Toyota Calidina. Security forces picked among other exhibits motor vehicle UBE 808F, a pistol, two bundles of fake dollars.
