The National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu has asked the people of Koboko Municipality to vote the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party candidate, Dr. Charles Ayume.
Ayume recently defeated the state minister for Investment, Evelyn Anite in the NRM party primaries. Anite earlier claimed that she was the gateway to Koboko and assured the nation that Kyagulanyi and his People Power/NUP have no support there.
But addressing a mammoth gathering at Koboko Boma grounds today, Kyagulanyi noted that the large crowds that welcomed him and attended his rally have shamefaced Anite and indeed proven that she's not the 'gateway to Koboko' as she claims.
"You removed the gateway even before I came," he said to the cheering crowd.
Kyagulanyi said despite the fact that Dr. Ayume belongs to the ruling NRM, he is a young man who has suffered the same challenges at the hands of Museveni's regime like all the youth in the country.
According to Kyagulanyi, his government is ready to work with Ayume and other young legislators from the political divide to address the challenges of suppression and poverty, which have hit the youth hardest.
"I'm asking you the people of Koboko to go and vote for that young man called Charles Ayume. Listen, I know he might not say anything good about me, but I understand. Charles Ayume will not come here to claim for a report of the death of [his father] Francis Ayume because very many families under Museveni have been intimidated but because am called 'Opiny', I have no fear. I want the people of Koboko to know that I have not come to Koboko to fight against fellow young people, I'm here for freedom and justice. I'm here for the truth and we continue to demand for the report of the death of that great man, this is a generation that must get answers. Charles Ayume wherever you're, am telling you that you must stand firm for your father stood firm," said Kyagulanyi.
The late Francis Ayume was killed alongside his bodyguard, Michael Geriga in a gruesome motor accident in Nakasongola district along the Gulu-Kampala highway in 2004 while returning from a golf tournament in Masindi. His driver and friend though survived the accident. At the time of his death, Ayume was speaker of parliament after taking over from James Wapakhabulo, who also died in an accident less than 2 months earlier. NUP supporters welcomed Kyagulanyi's support for Ayume, saying they are ready to support him.
Unlike the previous campaign rallies, security officers didn't break Kyagulanyi's meeting in Koboko despite the mammoth crowd that convened to welcome him.
