The National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine plans to kidnap himself and hide in one of the embassies and then claim being kidnapped, Police spokesperson Fred Enanga has said.
Enanga said they have received intelligence that Kyagulanyi intends to go into hiding in an embassy after casting his vote and then spread false information that he has been grabbed by security agencies.
Enanga warned Kyagulanyi not to attempt his alleged move because security agencies are more than prepared for him. Ugandans will cast their votes to elect the president and members of parliament on Thursday this week. Kyagulanyi is perceived as the biggest challenger to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni who has been in power since January 26, 1986.
Police arrested Kyagulanyi on November 18 last year at his campaign venue in Luuka district something which sparked off countrywide protests. Police and the military highhandedly quashed the protests shooting at least 54 people dead and leaving scores injured and over 1,000 arrested.
Enanga said Kyagulanyi's plan to hide is intended to cause a recurrence of the November incidents but security is more than ready to quash such riots. The army has been heavily deployed in the city centre and surrounding areas.
UPDF spokesperson, Brig Flavia Byekwaso, urged the public not to fear the heavy deployments in Kampala and various other towns. Byekwaso said the soldiers and other security personnel will ensure no disruptions are recorded during or after the voting exercise.
The security agencies have called upon the public to remain calm and peacefully exercise their constitutional right by choosing leaders of their choice. Byekwaso added that they have received intelligence of weapons such as catapults stocked in city buildings purposely to attack security personnel.
