Security is heightened at Busega roundabout on the outskirts of Kampala where President Yoweri Museveni is expected to meet residents and the business community. There are tens of military and police officers deployed to maintain security in the area.
Traffic there has been paralysed with vehicles hardly moving from either side of the road. Part of the road is covered by people dressed in yellow T-shirts, the official colour of the ruling party. They are also holding placards in praise of Museveni and congratulating him upon winning the just concluded presidential election. In a nearby green space, trucks are playing pro-Museveni songs.
The group is rather crowded - contrary to guidelines issued by the ministry of Health and the Electoral Commission that limit congregating and maintaining a safe distance between individuals as a measure to forestall the spread of Covid-19.
Music promoter Balaam Barugahara is in the mix coordinating entertainment activities at the venue. One of the entertainers is a traditional dance group, playing and dancing to Kiganda songs and the other is a band which is entertaining the spectators as they wait for Museveni who started his journey in Lyantonde town early today.
Museveni's itinerary included stopovers in Kyazanga, Lukaya, Kayabwe, Mpigi, Kyengera-Busega and Constitutional Square. He is however yet to reach Busega where he was supposed to be at 5 pm.
Museveni won a sixth presidential term last week with 58.64 per cent, defeating the National Unity Platform candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu who had 34.83 per cent as per results declared by the Electoral Commission.
