A suspect has allegedly committed suicide inside Isunga Central police station cells in Kagadi district, western Uganda.
Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson identified the suspect as Geoffrey Matala, a mechanic and a resident of Kisegya village in Isunga sub-county, Kagadi. The incident happened on Saturday night. Matala had been arrested recently for allegedly stealing a motorcycle.
Hakiza says Matala's body was found dangling in the police cells. According to Hakiza, Matala used a piece of blanket to commit suicide.
At the time of the incident, there were five suspects in the cells, however, it is not clear how he committed suicide in the presence of the suspects. Hakiza says currently they are interrogating the five suspects to establish how the deceased committed suicide in their presence.
In December 2020, a female inmate was reportedly killed by a fellow prisoner at Masindi government prison. The deceased identified as Betty Nyesigire was killed by Joan Bainomugisa, an inmate who was serving a 19-year jail sentence for murder.
Nyesigire was also on remand for murder charges. Nyesigire had been taking care of Bainomugisa who was isolated from the other inmates after developing a mental problem. She was hit with a blunt object when she entered Bainomugisa's room.
