Police to continue guarding Kasango's unburied body

Police will continue guarding the A-Plus Funeral Services home in Nsambya in Kampala until the two warring families of the deceased lawyer, Bob Kasango agree on where he will be buried.

Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, said police shall not leave the premises purposely to avoid a clash between Tororo and Tooro families fighting over his body. Kasango died on February 27 at Luzira Murchison Bay hospital where he had been rushed by the prison leadership following a heart complication.

Kasango was serving a 16-year jail term handed to him by the Anti-Corruption court in 2018 after he was found guilty of stealing over Shs 15 billion meant for more than 6,000 pensioners. Police has been deployed at the funeral home since Tuesday last week after the two families fought at All Saints Church Nakasero after a funeral service.

The Tororo family led by the deceased's mother, Rose Kabise and the Tooro family led by the widow, Nice Bitarabeho, are fighting over who should bury Kasango's body. Kabise says her son must be buried at the ancestral home in Wikusi village, West Budama County, in Tororo district.

But Bitarabeho insists that her husband must be buried at Gweri village, Fort Portal, in Kabalore district claiming it is where they had their matrimonial home and even left behind a will to the effect. The Tororo family snatched Kasango's body from the A-Plus team as they prepared to wheel it into a hearse, saying they have to reserve Kasango's dignity because it is unheard of for a man to be buried at his in-law's place.

Police intercepted them in Namugongo and handed back the body to A-Plus undertakers. Despite several meetings, the two families have failed to agree on where Kasango should be laid to rest. Onyango says police will continue providing security until a consensus is reached.

"The body is still with A-Plus under our protection. We are still waiting for the family to resolve their issue," Onyango said.

Kabise last Friday said she will reveal the true father of Kasango at an appropriate time. Kabise and her children spoke in Luzira, where she denounced Sam Okello as being the actual biological father of Kasango.

Okello does not have any paternity relationship with the deceased advocate, Kabise said, adding that she is the only one who knows Kasango's father and it is the reason she insists that her son should be buried in West Budama.

"I have read stories claiming that Sam Okello is Kasango's father," Kabise said. "That is not true. I know the true father of my son. Sam Okello is not in any way related to him. I can call him a guardian. He helped to raise him."
